It was in 1847 when the son of a powder horn maker, Louis-Francois Cartier, established his own company and was soon dubbed as "Joaillier des Rois" or Jeweler of the Kings by none other than the Prince of Wales Edward VII. In 1904, heeding an aviator friends request, Cartier expanded into watchmaking and had the same positive response. One of the most coveted collection is the Cartier Tank Chinoise. Inspired by the Chinese ancient temples, the square case measures between 20mm to 37mm in 18k gold or platinum with a cabochon sapphire crown with a versions elegantly set with diamonds. The first Tank Chinoise models were launched around the late twenties and early thirties. The Tank Chinoise was later included in Cartiers Collection Privee of remade vintage models. Powered by handwound movement, the Cartier Tank Chinoises engine turned dial is decorated by Roman numerals with matching blued steel hands indicating the hours and minutes. Water resistant up to 30m, the Cartier Tank Chinoise has become one of the most beloved Cartier timepiece.
